Kitesurf Season in Progreso — Nortes, Trades and Quiet Weeks

Progreso's wind mixes Caribbean trade from the east with Gulf Nortes from the north. When each dominates, and what each delivers for kitesurf.

🔎 TL;DR

  • Progreso wind has two regimes: east trades Mar–Jul, north/NE Nortes Nov–Feb.
  • Nortes deliver 20–30 kn burst sessions; trades deliver 15–22 kn steady.
  • Aug–Oct = light and hurricane risk; skip.
  • Most consistent month: May.

The two wind systems

Unlike Isla Blanca (dominated year-round by Caribbean trade wind), Progreso sits on the Gulf coast and receives Nortes — cold front surges from the US — in addition to the easterly trades that wrap around. The result is two distinct kite windows.

  • Mar–Jul (trades): E/ESE, 15–22 kn, consistent morning-to-evening.
  • Nov–Feb (Nortes): N/NE, 20–30 kn bursts, more gusty, warmer day riding between fronts.

Frequently asked questions

Best month for first-timers?

May — steady trade wind, warm water, no Norte chaos.

Is Norte wind too strong?

For advanced riders it is the best of the year. For learners, trades are safer.

Any overlap with Isla Blanca wind?

Yes — same trade system hits both. If Isla Blanca is windy, Progreso likely is too (slightly weaker).
