Kayak in Progreso — Mangrove Eco-Tours, Flamingos & Family Paddles

Kayak Progreso in one of Mexico\'s richest mangrove ecosystems. The Chelem–Chuburná estuary is a 20-km maze of red-mangrove channels, salt flats and shallow lagoons — home to pink flamingos, great egrets, roseate spoonbills, ibis, iguanas and crocodiles. It\'s calm, shallow, quiet and nothing like the tourist-heavy Caribbean coast.

We run guided eco-tours with certified bilingual guides (2-hour and 4-hour options), rent single and tandem kayaks for independent paddling, and combine kayak with cenote dips in San Crisanto for a full eco day.

Safety-first operation: life vests, dry bags, hydration included. First-timers and kids 5+ welcome — our tandem kayaks let parents paddle with smaller kids on the same boat.

Why kayak Progreso

Why Progreso is Yucatán's best kayak destination

Calm shallow estuaries, wildlife at arm's reach and cenotes 5 minutes inland — you won't find this combo elsewhere in Mexico.

Chelem–Chuburná estuary

A 20-km protected mangrove system between Chelem and Chuburná villages. Red mangrove channels, salt flats, shallow lagoons — biosphere-level biodiversity.

Flamingos & herons

Pink flamingos feed in the interior lagoons at dawn. Great egrets, roseate spoonbills, white ibis and pelicans are daily sightings.

Calm shallow water

Estuary channels are 1–2 m deep, zero current, zero waves. Even total beginners paddle comfortably within 5 minutes.

Kids 5+ welcome

Tandem kayaks let parents paddle with kids as young as 5 on the same boat. Kids 10+ can solo-paddle in the protected channels.

Cenote combos

Post-kayak, drive 15 min to San Crisanto's cenote or 40 min to Homún cenotes for a freshwater dip. Salt + fresh water in one day.

Authentic, uncrowded

Often we're the only kayak on the channel. No tour buses, no jet-ski noise, just mangrove silence and bird calls.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need kayak experience?

Not at all. The Chelem estuary is shelter, shallow and current-free. We give a 10-minute beach tutorial (paddling technique, how to turn, what to do if you tip) before launch. Complete beginners are paddling confidently within 5 minutes.

Is it safe for kids?

Yes. Kids 5+ can ride tandem with a parent. Kids 10+ can solo-paddle in the protected channels with a guide nearby. Life vests are mandatory and included. Water is 1–2 m deep in the estuary — if a kid tips, they stand up.

Will I see flamingos?

Likely, especially Nov–Apr at dawn or golden hour. Flamingos feed in the interior lagoons of the Chelem–Chuburná estuary. Sightings aren't guaranteed — they're wild birds — but our guides know the feeding spots and time tours to maximize chances. For 100% guarantee, book a day trip to Celestún or Río Lagartos (larger flamingo colonies, 2 h drive).

Are there crocodiles?

Yes — American crocodiles (Crocodylus acutus) live in the deep interior channels of the estuary. Our tours stay in the outer channels where crocs are almost never encountered. We keep a respectful distance if we see one sunning on a bank. Zero incidents in 5+ years of operation.

Can I combine kayak with a cenote visit?

Absolutely — it's our signature Kayak + Cenote combo. Morning kayak in Chelem or San Crisanto, then 15–45 minute drive inland to a cenote (San Crisanto, Homún or Cuzamá). Full day, transport included if you book with us.

What should I bring?

Swimsuit, rash guard or quick-dry shirt, reef-safe sunscreen, hat, water bottle and bug repellent (mangroves have mosquitoes at dusk). We provide kayak, paddle, life vest, dry bag and drinking water. Leave valuables in your car or the tour van — we don't recommend bringing phones unless you have a waterproof case.

How do I get to Progreso from Mérida?

Progreso is 35 km north of Mérida, 40 minutes by car on the Mérida–Progreso highway. Colectivos (shared vans) from Mérida's Parque de San Juan run every 15 min for ~$35 MXN. Uber works but not always for the return. We can arrange round-trip transport as an add-on.

What about mosquitoes?

Mangroves have mosquitoes at dusk and dawn. Our tours are timed mid-morning or mid-afternoon specifically to avoid peak mosquito hours. We also provide eco-friendly repellent. Bring a long-sleeve shirt for pre-tour.

What if it rains?

Light rain is fine and actually beautiful in the mangroves — we continue. Heavy rain, thunder or lightning means we reschedule for later the same day or another day, or full refund if you can't reschedule.

Do you guide in English?

Yes — our guides speak English, Spanish and basic French. The eco briefing and bird IDs are given in your preferred language. We've guided riders from 20+ countries.
