5,280 km² protected reserve since 1986. One of the largest in the Americas. Strict access rules keep boats out — kayak is the way in.

Kayak the UNESCO biosphere reserve south of Tulum — ancient Maya trade canals, mangrove channels and wildlife
Sian Ka\'an is one of the largest protected coastal reserves in the Americas — a 5,280 km² UNESCO biosphere reserve south of Tulum. The kayak experience here is unlike anywhere else in Mexico: ancient Maya canals at Muyil (used by the Maya for trade 1,200 years ago, still navigable), mangrove channels, freshwater lagoons, and abundant wildlife — crocodiles, tarpon, herons, ibis, occasional manatees.
Tours are guided by certified eco-guides (the reserve requires licensed operators). Standard format: drive 30 min south of Tulum to Muyil, paddle through the lagoons, swim/float through one of the Maya canals (current carries you), then return. Half-day tour, ~5 hours total including transport.
Year-round operation, but cooler months (Nov–Apr) are most pleasant — less mosquito activity and milder midday heat. Family-friendly: kids 8+ paddle solo with vest and guide nearby; smaller kids tandem with a parent. Pickup from Tulum and Playa del Carmen included.
1,200-year-old Maya engineering + UNESCO biosphere wildlife + zero motorboats — found nowhere else.

The Muyil section has navigable canals dug by the Maya 1,200 years ago for trade between coastal and inland villages. You paddle/float through them.
Crocodiles, herons, ibis, frigates, occasional manatees, tarpon. Mangrove birds active dawn and dusk. Eco-guides know the spots.
A 20+ km mangrove maze of channels and lagoons. Red mangrove tunnels, brackish water, complete silence (no motors allowed in protected zones).
CONANP-licensed guides know the reserve, enforce no-touch and no-litter rules, identify wildlife and explain Maya history.
Mangrove water 26–29 °C. Wear quick-dry. Bring biodegradable bug repellent — mosquitoes peak dusk and dawn.
Drive to Muyil, kayak through the lagoons + float Maya canal. Eco-guide briefing on flora/fauna and Maya history. ~5 hours.
Long-day tour to Punta Allen on the southern edge of Sian Ka'an. Coastal kayak, dolphin sightings (resident pod), beach lunch.
Dawn paddle on protected mangrove channels just outside Sian Ka'an. Birds active, water glass-flat, fewer guests.
Year-round; best Nov–Apr (cooler, drier, fewer mosquitoes). Hurricane season Aug–Oct may cancel some days.
Sian Ka'an is a UNESCO biosphere reserve since 1986 — one of the largest protected coastal reserves in the Americas (5,280 km²). It's mostly inaccessible (no motorboats, no roads). Kayaking through ancient Maya trade canals at Muyil is one of the few legal ways to see it.
Yes — American crocodiles live throughout the mangrove channels. Most are shy and you may not see them. No incidents in 20+ years of guided kayak operation. Rules: stay in your kayak, no swimming outside designated areas.
Reliably yes. Birds (herons, ibis, frigates, kingfishers), tarpon, sometimes crocodiles, sometimes manatees. Dawn and dusk paddles maximize sightings. Eco-guide identifies and explains.
The Maya dug them 1,200 years ago to connect Muyil to the Caribbean for trade. They're shallow (chest-deep) and have gentle current. You float/paddle through them — it's like an ancient lazy river.
Yes — for kids 8+ on stable kayaks. Younger ones tandem with parent. Eco-guide stays with the group. Crocodiles are not aggressive in this context. Mosquito repellent essential.
