Scuba Diving in Mexico — Reefs, Cenotes & Discovery Dives

Mexico is home to the second-largest barrier reef in the world (the Mesoamerican Reef) and the most extensive underwater cave system on the planet — the cenotes of the Yucatán Peninsula. Visibility over 30 meters, warm 26–29 °C water year-round, and over 500 dive sites within 2 hours of Cancun.

Our PADI-certified dive masters guide reef dives, cenote cave/cavern dives and Discover Scuba programs for first-timers. Full Open Water and Advanced certifications available on request.

Every dive is direct with the local operator — no OTAs, no group-of-40 boats. Small groups, careful briefing, safety-first protocols.

Why Mexico

Why divers return to Mexico

Two totally different ecosystems within 1 hour of each other — few destinations in the world offer this mix.

100 m visibility cenotes

Freshwater sinkholes with crystal-clear water, dramatic light beams, stalactites and ancient limestone formations. Like diving inside a cathedral.

Mesoamerican Reef

Second-largest reef system globally. Healthy coral, eagle rays, turtles, schools of grunts and snappers, even the occasional whale shark in summer.

Warm 26–29 °C water

A 3 mm shorty is usually enough. Longer cenote dives might need 5 mm for freshwater thermoclines.

PADI instructors

All guides and instructors are PADI-certified and cave-trained for cenote dives. Safety protocols meet international standards.

Small groups (4:1)

Maximum 4 divers per guide. No herding, no rushing — you get actual dive time to watch critters and take photos.

500+ dive sites near you

Cancun reef, MUSA underwater museum, Isla Mujeres, Puerto Morelos, cenotes Dos Ojos, Angelita, Casa Cenote. All within 2 hours.

Scuba diving by destination

Live in Cancun with cenote day trips to Riviera Maya. Other regions coming through 2026.

Best diving season

When to dive in the Mexican Caribbean

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be certified to scuba dive in Cancun?

For standard reef and cenote dives you need at least PADI Open Water (or SSI/CMAS equivalent). If you're not certified our Discover Scuba Diving program lets you dive with an instructor up to 12 m with zero experience — a perfect taste of what's possible.

What's the difference between reef and cenote diving?

Reef diving is saltwater, ocean-based — color, fish, turtles, rays, sometimes sharks. Cenote diving is freshwater inside limestone caves and caverns. No fish but incredible light beams, stalactites, thermoclines and a totally unique atmosphere. Most divers want to do both.

How cold is the water? Do I need a wetsuit?

Caribbean reef water stays 26–29 °C year-round — a 3 mm shorty is enough. Cenote water is around 24–25 °C and has thermoclines; many divers prefer a 5 mm full suit for cenote trips. Both are included.

When is whale shark season?

Whale sharks aggregate off Isla Mujeres roughly mid-June through mid-September. We run snorkel-with-whale-shark tours during that window. It's snorkeling (not scuba) — Mexican regulations prohibit scuba around them to protect the animals.

How long is a typical dive day?

Reef 2-tank trips are half-day (7:30 am departure, back by noon or 1 pm). Cenote trips are full-day excursions with 2 dives, lunch and transport from your hotel — around 7 am to 5 pm.

Can I get certified during my vacation?

Yes. PADI Open Water takes 3 days: e-learning before you arrive (about 8 hours), then 1 day pool and 2 days open-water dives. Advanced Open Water adds 2 days.

Are your guides really PADI-certified?

Yes. All hold current PADI Divemaster or Instructor certifications, trained in O2 administration, first response and local-site specialties. Cenote guides have Cavern / Intro-to-Cave certifications.

What gear is included?

Full kit: BCD, regulator, tank (AL80), weights, mask, fins, snorkel, wetsuit, dive computer on request. You bring swimwear, towel and reef-safe sunscreen.

Can non-divers come along?

On reef trips yes — snorkelers can join at most sites. Cenote trips are dive-only since the surface-only area is limited.

Is diving safe for non-swimmers?

Basic swimming ability is required for open-water dives. For Discover Scuba we start in shallow controlled water with an instructor by your side. Medical conditions (asthma, heart, recent surgery) require a doctor's clearance.
