Surf in Los Cabos — Pacific south swell, three coasts

Los Cabos surfs nothing like Cancún. The Pacific south swell window runs May to October, fanning long-period lines into the East Cape while Cerritos and Old Man's catch the same energy a few kilometers west — three distinct coasts inside a 90-minute drive.

AquaCore runs lessons with water-safety-certified instructors, soft-top and performance board rentals, and multi-day trips with hotel + van transport from Cabo San Lucas or San José del Cabo. We keep groups to two students per instructor and time sessions around tide, wind, and crowd.

Cerritos and Old Man's welcome first-timers and longboarders. Punta Lobos works for intermediates on a clean south. Costa Azul, Zippers, and Monuments are reef-bottom waves for confirmed surfers only. From mid-October through March the north winds dominate, so we recommend diving, snorkeling, or yacht time during that window.

Why Los Cabos for surf

What Los Cabos delivers that Cancún can't

Real ocean swell, a coastline that gives you three options in one morning, and quiet mid-week sessions outside the August peak.

Pacific south swell

May to October the Southern Hemisphere winter sends long-period swell our way. Average head-high lines on a normal day, double overhead on the peaks of July through September.

Three coasts in 90 min

East Cape reef breaks (Costa Azul, Zippers, Monuments), Pacific beach breaks (Cerritos, Pescadero), and the longboard wave at Old Man's near San José — we move with the conditions, not the other way around.

Every level covered

Soft-top lessons on sand-bottom beach breaks for beginners, performance days for intermediates at Punta Lobos and Old Man's, advanced clinics on the East Cape reefs when the swell turns on.

Boards + transport

Shortboards, longboards, fish, mid-lengths, and soft-tops in our rental fleet. Air-conditioned van transport, boards strapped on the roof, leash and wax included.

Small classes

Two students per instructor maximum on beginner days, one-on-one on advanced. Pre-session safety briefing covers rips, etiquette, paddle priority, and the local hazards at each break.

Water temp by season

22 to 28 °C from June to October — boardshorts or bikini only. 19 to 22 °C from December to March — a 2 mm short-john or springsuit keeps you out for 90 minutes.

🏄
Advanced only

Costa Azul

East Cape reef break — Zippers, The Rock, Old Man's East Cape. Heavy summer south swells, crowds at first light, locals-only on the takeoff. Strong intermediates and up.

Best conditions

When to surf in Los Cabos

South swell window May to October — peak July through September. November to March the north winds (nortes) shut down most spots; better to dive or run a yacht day in those months.

Frequently asked questions

Where exactly do you surf in Los Cabos?

Three coasts, depending on the day. Cerritos (Pacific beach break, ~1 hr drive), Old Man's near San José del Cabo (longboard wave, ~25 min from SJD), and the East Cape reef breaks at Costa Azul, Zippers, and Monuments. Van transport from Cabo San Lucas or San José is included.

Is it really beginner-friendly?

Yes — at Cerritos and Old Man's, both sand-bottom or mellow point waves. We start with land safety, paddling, and pop-up drills, then move to the water with a soft-top, a leash, and a rashguard. Most students stand up on their first wave within the first hour. Costa Azul and the reef breaks are not beginner waves.

What's the best month for first-timers?

May to June and September to October. The swell is consistent but not yet maxed out, water is warm, and the August peak crowd has cleared. July and August can work — they just mean earlier starts and more people in the lineup.

Can I surf in winter?

Limited. The north winds dominate from November to March and blow out most Pacific spots most days. The East Cape can still produce on a winter NW swell, but it's inconsistent. In winter we usually recommend diving, snorkeling, or a yacht charter instead and save the surf trip for summer.

What gear is included?

Board (soft-top for beginners, performance options for intermediates and up), leash, wax, and a rashguard. Bring swimwear, reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, and water. A 2 mm short-john or springsuit is available for an extra fee from October through April.

Do you run multi-day surf trips?

Yes — 3, 5, and 7-day packages built around the south swell forecast. Includes hotel near the break of the day, transport, daily lessons or guided sessions, board, and post-session debrief. Send your dates and skill level on WhatsApp and we'll confirm a plan.
