90 % wind reliability
Nov–Mar typically delivers wind 25+ days per month. Daily forecast windows usually 11:00–17:00 with steady ramp-up.
Flat-water kiting, steady 18–25 knot thermals November–March. IKO lessons, rentals and downwinders
Los Barriles on the East Cape is one of the most consistent kitesurf venues in the Americas. From November through March, steady afternoon thermals deliver 18–25 knots almost daily — the “El Norte” weather pattern accelerated by the topography of the Sea of Cortez. Flat water at Punta Arena just south of town suits freestylers and learners; open-water swell along the main bay rewards advanced riders.
We work with IKO-certified instructors and run lessons (private and semi-private), full gear rentals (kites 7–14 m, boards 130–145 cm), and guided downwinders along the East Cape coastline. Storage, rescue cover and bilingual coaching are standard.
Los Barriles is 1 hour north of San José del Cabo airport (SJD) on a paved highway. Most kite guests stay in Los Barriles for the season; we coordinate accommodation and ground transfers on request.
Topography + thermals + flat water = one of the most reliable seasons on the planet.

Los Barriles hosts the Lord of the Wind freestyle event (March). Advanced riders can join clinics with current pros during the event.
Many riders rent a casita for the month. Affordable lodging, surf-and-kite community vibe — totally different from the corridor resort scene.

Book downwinder →Peak thermal season runs November to March. Late October and early April still have decent windows but less consistent. Outside that, very low wind reliability.
The kite hub is Los Barriles on the East Cape, 1 hour north of San José del Cabo airport (SJD). The main spots are Punta Arena (flat water, 4 km south of town — the learner spot) and the Los Barriles main bay (chop and small swell — intermediate+). Cabo San Lucas itself does NOT have reliable kite wind.
November through March is the wind season. Best months: December–February (most consistent thermals). October and April are shoulder months with less reliability. May–September: don't come for kite — wind is unreliable.
Yes — Punta Arena is one of the best learner spots in North America. Shallow chest-deep flat water, steady wind, no obstacles. IKO Level 1 (3–4 hours) typically ends with body dragging upwind. Level 2+3 (6–10 hours total) you should ride.
No — full rental gear is available. Quivers cover 7–14 m kites and 130–145 cm boards. Bring your own bar/lines if you ride a custom setup. Most operators rent kite + bar + board + harness as a package or à la carte.
Minimum 5–7 days to cover wind variability and skill progression. Many riders stay 2–4 weeks for the full experience. Casita rentals in Los Barriles are common and far cheaper than corridor hotels.
Private lessons run 1-on-1 (or 1-on-2) with an IKO-certified instructor in radio helmet contact. Sessions are 2–3 hours each. The IKO progression: Level 1 (control), Level 2 (water start), Level 3 (independent rider). Most learners need 8–12 total hours to ride independently.
Very safe. Los Barriles is a tight-knit community with year-round kite locals and a network of pro riders. Rescue boats are on standby during peak hours. The biggest hazard is overconfidence — respect your level and progress incrementally.
