Progreso — Yucatán's Authentic Water-Adventure Coast

Progreso is a working port town 35 km north of Mérida, on the Gulf of Mexico side of the Yucatán peninsula. Unlike the Caribbean resort zone, it\'s calm, shallow, culturally yucateco and dramatically less crowded. Perfect for travelers who want water adventures without the tourist machinery.

We operate seven live activities here: stand-up paddleboard, private yacht charters from Marina Yucalpetén, kitesurf (nortes season Nov–Mar), wave-runner rentals, mangrove kayak eco-tours and two cenote day-trips. Book direct, responded within 1 hour.

Easy day trip from Mérida (40 min), and the natural base for visiting Arrecife Alacranes, the largest reef in the Gulf of Mexico.

Progreso activities — all live and bookable

Four experiences designed for the unique conditions of Yucatán's north coast.

Why Progreso

What makes the Yucatán north coast different

Very different character vs Cancún and the Riviera Maya — authentic, quiet, affordable, wildlife-rich.

40 min from Mérida

Easy day trip from Mérida via a fast highway. Combine a morning water activity with an afternoon cultural visit to Mérida centro.

Chelem–Chuburná estuary

20-km protected mangrove system between two fishing villages. Red mangrove channels, salt flats, lagoons and abundant wildlife.

Arrecife Alacranes

The largest reef in the Gulf of Mexico, a UNESCO-backed biosphere reserve 130 km offshore. Accessible via full-day yacht charter.

Nortes season

Nov–Mar cold fronts bring 15–25 knots of consistent wind — world-class kitesurf conditions on flat water.

Warm shallow water

Gulf water stays 26–29 °C year-round. Shallow sand bottom means waist-deep 100 m offshore — safe for families and beginners.

Authentic yucateco vibe

Working port, locals outnumber tourists, honest prices, yucateca food scene. What the Mexican coast used to feel like everywhere.

Frequently asked questions

Where exactly is Progreso?

Progreso is on the northern coast of the Yucatán peninsula, 35 km north of Mérida, on the Gulf of Mexico. It's a 40-minute drive from Mérida city center via the Mérida–Progreso highway. Colectivos (shared vans) run every 15 min from Parque de San Juan.

Is it good for families?

Very much so. The water is calm, shallow and warm, the vibe is relaxed, and the activities we operate (paddleboard, kayak, yacht charters) are all kid-friendly. Kids 5+ can kayak, 8+ can paddleboard solo, and yacht charters welcome all ages.

Can I combine Progreso with Cancún?

Yes — many guests do a Mexico loop: Cancún/Riviera Maya first (Caribbean beaches), then Mérida and Progreso (culture + authentic Gulf coast). We can help coordinate the full itinerary with activities in both regions.

When is the best time to visit Progreso?

Depends on the activity. Paddleboard and kayak: Feb–May and Nov–Dec are peak. Yacht charters: Apr–Aug for calm Gulf water. Kitesurf: Nov–Mar (nortes season). Avoid Aug–Sep for hurricane risk.
