Riviera Maya — Cenotes, Reefs and the Maya Caribbean

The Riviera Maya is the 130-km Caribbean coastline south of Cancún, from Puerto Morelos through Playa del Carmen, Akumal and Tulum. It sits on top of the world\'s largest underground river system: 10,000+ documented cenotes, the second-largest barrier reef on Earth (the Mesoamerican Reef diving), and a year-round resident sea-turtle population at Akumal.

We operate nine live experiences here through partner dive shops, marina captains and certified guides: cenote diving at Dos Ojos and Gran Cenote, Mesoamerican Reef dives from Puerto Morelos and Playa del Carmen, swim-with-turtles in Akumal, yacht charters from Puerto Aventuras and Tulum, reef and cenote snorkeling, kitesurf at Soliman Bay, paddleboard on cenotes and the Caribbean, and Sian Ka\'an mangrove kayak.

The Caribbean visibility window is best November–June; cenotes stay 24 °C year-round. Bookings direct with the operator — we respond within an hour, with bilingual EN/ES support and PADI/SDI-affiliated dive shops.

Why the Riviera Maya

What makes the Riviera Maya different from Cancún

Same Caribbean coastline, very different geography and rhythm.

10,000+ cenotes

You're standing on top of the world's largest underground freshwater river system. Hundreds of cenotes within 1 hour of the coast — diving, snorkeling, swimming.

Mesoamerican Reef

The 1,000-km barrier reef begins here. Puerto Morelos National Park keeps the closest, healthiest section. Year-round turtle, ray and tropical-fish encounters.

Stable warm water

Caribbean 26–29 °C year-round; cenotes a steady 24 °C. Visibility 20–40 m on the reef, often >50 m in cenotes. Wetsuit optional.

Akumal turtle bay

A protected bay with a resident green-turtle population that grazes seagrass year-round. Snorkel under licensed-guide ratios — the ethical way.

UNESCO biosphere

Sian Ka'an, just south of Tulum, is one of the largest protected coastal reserves in the Americas. Kayak ancient Maya trade canals through the mangroves.

Quieter than Cancún

Smaller hotels, boutique vibe, walkable towns (Tulum, Playa del Carmen). Better for travelers seeking less megaresort, more local color.

Frequently asked questions

Where exactly is the Riviera Maya?

The Riviera Maya is the Caribbean coastline of Quintana Roo from Puerto Morelos in the north (just south of Cancún airport) to Punta Allen at the southern edge of Sian Ka'an. Main towns: Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Aventuras, Akumal, Tulum. Cancún itself is technically just north of it; Cozumel is the island offshore.

How is it different from Cancún?

Cancún is the resort hub — bigger hotels, nightlife, MUSA underwater museum, Isla Mujeres ferry. The Riviera Maya is smaller-scale — boutique stays, walkable towns, easier access to cenotes and Sian Ka'an. For diving and cenotes, the Riviera Maya wins. For yachts and Isla Mujeres, Cancún wins. Many guests do both.

When is the best time to visit?

Peak Caribbean window: November to April — sunny, dry, low humidity, water 27 °C. May to October is hotter with daily afternoon thunderstorms; cenotes stay perfect. Hurricane risk peaks Aug–Oct — book with flexible cancellation. Cenotes are year-round; reef visibility best Nov–Jun.

Are cenotes safe for non-divers?

Yes — most cenotes have shallow open-water sections perfect for swimmers and snorkelers (Casa Cenote, Yax-Kin, Manatí, Cristalino, Azul). Cavern and cave diving require certifications and guides. We offer cenote snorkeling for all ages 6+ and progressive dive paths from Open Water → cavern → full cave.

How do I swim with turtles in Akumal legally?

Akumal Bay is regulated. Only licensed operators can take you in, with strict guide-to-guest ratios (max 6 to 1) and no-touch rules. We use licensed partners — the experience is short (45 min in water) but ethical and high-success-rate. Avoid unlicensed beach “guides” — they damage the bay and risk fines for guests.

Where do yacht charters depart from?

Three options. Puerto Aventuras Marina — central, full-service, 30 min south of PDC. Playa del Carmen — smaller, more flexible, beach launch. Cancún Marina + transfer — for guests staying north Riviera Maya who want larger-yacht inventory. We confirm the right marina at booking based on your itinerary.

What languages do guides operate in?

English and Spanish as standard. Italian, French and German available on yacht charters and private dive trips with advance notice. The cenote-dive instructor pool is one of the most internationally diverse in Mexico — most speak 2–3 languages.

What dive certifications do operators hold?

Our partner dive shops operate under PADI, SDI/TDI or SSI systems. Cenote cavern guides hold full-cave certifications. Discover Scuba is available for non-divers in cenotes (cavern only) and at the reef. We confirm which agency before booking so you can match your certification.

How does pricing work?

We quote against current availability rather than publishing fixed rates — pricing varies by season, guide ratios and dive sites chosen. Send a WhatsApp with dates, group size and target activity; we respond within an hour with confirmed pricing. Direct with operator — no middleman markup.

Can I combine the Riviera Maya with Cancún?

Absolutely — many of our guests use Cancún airport (CUN) and split their stay. Drive time: PDC 45 min, Tulum 1h45. We can build itineraries that take advantage of each region's strengths (Cancún for Isla Mujeres + MUSA, Riviera Maya for cenotes + turtles + Sian Ka'an).

Questions about the Riviera Maya?

Our Quintana Roo team responds within 1 hour. We can build multi-day itineraries (cenote + reef + turtles + Sian Ka'an) and coordinate transfers from Cancún airport.
