Kitesurfing in the Riviera Maya happens at the Caribbean side, not the East Cape Pacific. The wind here is side-onshore Caribbean trade winds: 12–20 knots, mostly in the afternoon, November to April. Less heroic than Los Barriles thermals but warmer water, lighter breeze, and the iconic Tulum coastline as scenery.
Two main spots: Tulum Beach (open-water with chop, intermediate-friendly), and Soliman Bay (smaller protected cove 25 min north — flat-water and ideal for beginners and freestyle). Both have IKO-certified instructors and gear-rental shops on site.
Best months: December to April (steadier wind, warmer days). Caribbean water 26 °C — riding in shorts/swimsuit. Lessons and rentals run on demand, not fixed schedule.
Trade-wind kitesurf, Caribbean warmth, Tulum vibes — completely different from East Cape thermals.

Air 24–28 °C, water 26 °C even in winter. Ride in swimsuit and rashguard. Far warmer than the East Cape.
Tulum has a small but capable IKO instructor pool — English/Spanish standard, French/German on request.
Tulum hotels are walking-distance from the beach. Stay-and-kite plans common. Smaller, more boutique vs corridor-style.
Combine kite mornings with afternoon cenote dives or cenote snorkel. Multi-activity Riviera Maya kite trips work great.

Los Barriles is a thermal-wind venue in Baja — bigger, more reliable wind (18–25 knots) but cooler water and more isolated. Riviera Maya is trade-wind — lighter wind (12–20 knots) but warmer water (26 °C), boutique Tulum vibe and Riviera-Maya combo experiences. Different trips for different riders.
Officially November to April. Best months Dec–Mar. Outside that, wind is unreliable and the rest of the year suits non-kite Riviera-Maya activities.
Soliman Bay's flat water is excellent for beginners. Tulum Beach's chop is intermediate-friendly. Advanced riders sometimes find Riviera Maya wind too light — they head to Los Barriles in the same season.
Yes — kites 7–14 m, boards 130–145 cm. Bring your own harness if it's adjusted to you. Most schools rent everything as a package.
Tulum has many beach-front hotels and casitas. Tulum Beach for beach-walk-to-kite. Soliman Bay area is quieter, more rural — small rentals and an eco-village vibe.
