Kitesurfing Progreso — Isla Blanca's Quieter Cousin

Warm shallow lagoons, steady onshore thermals, zero crowd: what Progreso offers kitesurfers and the one logistical catch nobody talks about.

🔎 TL;DR

  • Progreso is where experienced kiters go when Isla Blanca gets crowded — same eastern trade winds, shallow lagoons, half the operator count.
  • Wind season: Nov–Jul, peak Apr–Jun. Nortes in winter (up to 30 kn).
  • Best spots: El Cuyo (100 km east of Progreso, advanced), Chelem lagoon (beginners), Chuburná (intermediate).
  • Logistical catch: no big kite-school ecosystem. Bring your own gear OR book with us.

Why Progreso

The Yucatán coast has essentially the same trade wind that makes Cancún / Isla Blanca famous, but spread thinner. El Cuyo (eastern Yucatán) has become a cult destination among freestyle and wave kiters. Chelem lagoon, closer to Progreso town, is shallow enough for beginners all the way out.

If you kite in Cancún and want a quieter second stop, Progreso is a 4.5-hour drive west — or fly into Mérida.

The three spots

  • Chelem lagoon (beginner): flat, waist-deep, 1 km wide. Beginner-paradise.
  • Chuburná (intermediate): flat to light chop, larger water, cleaner wind.
  • El Cuyo (advanced): 2 h drive from Progreso. Waves, longer stretches, destination-level.

Where to stay?

Progreso town for services, Chelem for proximity to lagoon, El Cuyo for immersion.
