National Marine Park
Federally protected since 1998. No fishing, no anchoring on coral. Fish populations are dramatically higher than unprotected reef sections.
Calm shallow reef inside the protected marine park with abundant tropical fish and licensed bilingual guides
Puerto Morelos National Marine Park is the closest, healthiest section of the Mesoamerican Reef to most Riviera Maya hotels. The reef is just 500 m offshore, the lagoon between is shallow (1–4 m) and protected from waves — perfect for first-time snorkelers, kids and anyone who wants reef encounters without the swell of open coast.
Tours leave by panga (small boat) from Puerto Morelos pier — a 10-minute run to the reef. Park-licensed bilingual guides take groups to two snorkel sites, brief on the reef ecology and enforce no-touch rules. Sightings: parrotfish, sergeant majors, schools of grunts, eagle rays, sea turtles, occasional nurse sharks.
Open year-round. Best visibility November to June. Family-friendly: ages 5+ snorkel with life vest and parent. Half-day tours typically combine 2 reef sites with a short rest at the boat between.
Federal protection + close-to-shore reef + calm lagoon = the most reliable Caribbean snorkel near Cancún.
Federally protected since 1998. No fishing, no anchoring on coral. Fish populations are dramatically higher than unprotected reef sections.

Puerto Morelos is the first town south of Cancún airport (15 min driving). It's the northernmost point of the Riviera Maya. The reef and marine park sit 500 m off the town pier. Easy day-trip from Cancún hotels (~30 min) or PDC (~30 min north).
Puerto Morelos is reef snorkeling (tropical fish, rays, occasional turtles); Akumal is turtle-specific (year-round resident green turtles). Many guests do both — they complement each other. Different experience and different ecosystems.
Yes — relatively. Federal protection since 1998 has kept the Puerto Morelos section in better shape than unprotected reef nearby. Some bleaching events (2015, 2020) damaged sections, but recovery is ongoing and biodiversity remains high.
Possible but not guaranteed — green and hawksbill turtles do pass through. For year-round guaranteed sightings, do an Akumal turtle snorkel separately.
Frequent on the deeper reef sections — nurse sharks are docile bottom-dwellers. They sleep under coral overhangs during the day. No risk to snorkelers.
Park entrance fee, panga boat, bilingual guide, mask/snorkel/fins, life vest, drinking water. Bring: biodegradable reef-safe sunscreen, hat, GoPro if you have one.
