🔎 TL;DR
- Chelem lagoon = Progreso's closest kitesurf-friendly flat-water spot.
- Depth: waist-chest deep across most of the lagoon. Side-shore east wind.
- Wind season Nov–Jul (same as Caribbean coast), with strong Nortes Nov–Feb.
- Smaller and shallower than Isla Blanca; suitable for beginners and low-volume freestyle.
Geographic setup
Chelem lagoon sits inside the Chelem-Yucalpetén Ramsar wetland, just west of Progreso port. The lagoon is ~6 km long and 1–2 km wide. Trade wind from the east hits side-shore to the launch beaches on the south side. Unlike Isla Blanca (which is a long narrow peninsula), Chelem is a shallow enclosed lagoon fed by Gulf tide.
