Akumal Bay is the only place in Mexico where you can snorkel with sea turtles year-round in their natural feeding ground. The bay holds a resident population of green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) and occasional hawksbills grazing on seagrass. Sightings are exceptionally reliable — operators run with a near-100 % success rate.
Akumal is also regulated by federal authority (CONANP). The only legal way to enter the protected snorkel zone is with a licensed guide under official ratios (max 6 guests per guide, 45 minutes in water, no-touch enforced). Unlicensed beach “guides” damage the bay, harass the turtles and put you at risk of fines — we use only licensed partners.
Tours include the entrance fee, guide, mask/snorkel/fins, life vest and bilingual briefing. Departures from Akumal beach (3 km off the highway, 30 min south of Playa del Carmen). Family-friendly: kids 5+ snorkel with vest and parent.

Can I touch the turtles?
No — touching is strictly forbidden and ruins the experience for everyone. The rule is no-touch, no-chase, no-feeding. Guides enforce 2 m minimum distance. Stress and human contact damage the turtles' health.
How long am I in the water?
The protocol caps water time at 45 minutes in the protected zone. The full tour is ~90 minutes including briefing, gear-up, the actual snorkel and debrief. Operators rotate groups so the bay isn't overloaded.
What's the difference vs Cancún snorkel?
Cancún snorkel is reef-based — colorful fish but turtle sightings are by chance. Akumal is turtle-specific and year-round guaranteed sightings. The two experiences complement each other; many guests do both.
