Sea-lion colony
Pelican Rock has a year-round California sea-lion colony. Snorkel respectfully nearby — you'll hear them barking from the water.
Three protected coves with reef fish, eagle rays and the Pelican Rock sea-lion colony
Snorkeling in Los Cabos happens in three protected coves on the Sea-of-Cortez side of the corridor. Chileno Bay and Santa María Bay are designated marine protected areas with calm shallow water and high fish density; Pelican Rock, just outside Cabo San Lucas Marina, hosts a permanent California sea-lion colony.
Our snorkel trips run as guided boat tours (recommended — captains know the best zones at any tide) or as shore-based rentals from Chileno Bay parking. Gear, bilingual guide and life vests are included. Half-day trips often combine 2 of the 3 coves plus an El Arco photo stop.
Best visibility window: October to June (15–30 m visibility, 22–28 °C water). Family-friendly — ages 5+ welcome with life vests; kids 8+ snorkel independently. Optional GoPro rental on board for underwater photos.
Sea of Cortez biology, sea-lion encounters and El Arco backdrop you only get in Baja.

Both Chileno and Santa María are designated marine protected areas — no fishing, anchoring or take. Fish density is dramatically higher than the open coast.
Bays are wind-protected so trips run nearly every day. Visibility best Oct–Jun (often 25–30 m). Summer can drop to 10–15 m but still good.
Calm, shallow, sandy bottom. Ages 5+ snorkel with life vests; 8+ independently. Tour operators carry kid-size masks and floaties.
Mask, snorkel, fins, life vest, drinking water and bilingual guide come with every tour. Wetsuits available on cooler-water days.
Most snorkel boats stop at El Arco for a photo before the snorkel sites. You knock out the iconic Cabo shot and snorkel in one trip.
The classic. White-sand bottom, schools of yellow-tail surgeonfish and parrotfish, eagle rays in deeper sections. ~15 m max depth.
Book Chileno →
Smaller, deeper horseshoe-shaped bay. Higher diversity (moray eels, octopus, occasional turtles). Less crowded than Chileno.
Book Santa María →
Just past Lover's Beach. Snorkel adjacent to the resident sea-lion colony. Hear them bark underwater. Pair with El Arco photo stop.
Book Pelican Rock →Trips run year-round; best viz Oct–Jun. Hurricane risk Aug–Sep occasionally cancels boats.
The three classic sites are Chileno Bay, Santa María Bay (both marine protected areas in the Cabo San Lucas–San José corridor) and Pelican Rock (just outside Cabo San Lucas Marina, by the sea-lion colony). Most tours combine 2 of the 3 in a half-day.
If you snorkel Pelican Rock, very likely — there's a permanent colony there. The sea lions come up to investigate snorkelers but rules are: no touching, no chasing, give them space. Captains brief on etiquette before you enter the water.
Possible at Santa María Bay — green and hawksbill turtles graze the seagrass periodically. Not guaranteed. If you specifically want guaranteed turtles, snorkel Akumal in the Riviera Maya (year-round resident population) instead.
Yes — all three sites are calm, shallow and sandy. Ages 5+ snorkel with life vests; 8+ independently. Tour boats carry kid-size masks. Avoid Pelican Rock with very young kids — sea lions can be intimidating in close range.
Yes — mask, snorkel, fins, life vest, drinking water and a bilingual guide come with every tour. Wetsuits are available on cooler days (Dec–Feb water dips to 22 °C). Bring your own if you have prescription mask or sensitive skin.
Yes — Chileno Bay has free public beach access with parking. Bring or rent gear at the parking lot. But the best fish/turtle/ray density is reachable by boat; shore snorkeling stays close to the swim line.
