🔎 TL;DR
- Season: November to March — peak thermals 18–25 knots almost daily. Best months: Dec, Jan, Feb.
- Daily wind window: 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM. Mornings calm, afternoons consistent ramp-up.
- October and April are shoulder months — usable but less reliable. May–Sep: don't come for kite.
- Punta Arena (4 km south) is the flat-water beginner spot. Main bay has chop and small swell for intermediate+.
- Plan minimum 5–7 days. Many riders stay 2–4 weeks during peak season.
Why Los Barriles wind is so reliable
Los Barriles sits on the East Cape of Baja California Sur, on the Sea of Cortez side of the peninsula. The "El Norte" weather pattern — driven by cold-air masses pushing south from the US Pacific Northwest — channels through the gap between the Sierra de la Laguna and the Sierra Giganta. This creates a thermal wind funnel that delivers steady afternoon side-shore winds from November through March.
The result is one of the highest wind-day-counts in the Americas. Pro kiters compare it favorably to Tarifa, Cabarete and Hood River — and the water is warmer than all three.
Month-by-month wind calendar
- Oct: Shoulder. 50–60% wind days; 12–18 knots when it blows. Worth a shot if dates are flexible.
- Nov: Season opens. 70–80% wind days, 16–22 knots. First week of November is often the kickoff.
- Dec: Peak month #1. 85–95% wind days, 18–25 knots. Cold mornings, warm afternoons. Pre-Christmas is the sweet spot.
- Jan: Peak. Same as December. Lord of the Wind event prep.
- Feb: Peak month #2. Often the strongest winds of the season.
- Mar: Strong, warming. Lord of the Wind freestyle event happens here. Pros visit; consider mid-month.
- Apr: Tail end. 50% wind days. Warmer water, fewer riders.
- May–Sep: Don't come. Wind is unreliable; humidity climbs; storms possible.

What kit size for which month
- Big winds (Dec–Feb): 9–10 m for 80 kg riders, 7–8 m for lighter riders. Bring at least two sizes.
- Shoulder months (Oct, Apr): 11–12 m. Light-wind setups pay off.
- Foil: Punta Arena is foil paradise — light water, flat conditions, room to ride. 9 m foil kite handles most days.
Practical tips
- Stay in Los Barriles, not Cabo San Lucas. Cabo is 1 h south and you don't want to drive daily.
- Casitas rent for the month — much cheaper than corridor hotels.
- Lord of the Wind event runs in March — book accommodation 6+ weeks ahead.
- Bring a wetsuit shorty for early-season cold mornings.
- Rest days: drive to Cabo Pulmo (2 h) for a non-kite day — the diving is unmatched.
Frequently asked questions
Best month for my first trip to Los Barriles?
Late January to early March. The nortes are still consistent (20-30 knots most afternoons), the water has warmed slightly from December lows, and the East Cape lodging crowd hasn't peaked. Beginners get reliable wind windows and warm enough air for long beach sessions.
What kite size should I bring?
For a 75 kg rider: a 9 m and a 12 m cover the wind range from November to March. The afternoon nortes regularly hit 25 knots — your 9 m will get the most water time. A 7 m is overkill unless you're lighter or it's a storm day; rentals are easy if you'd rather travel without your full quiver.
Stay in Los Barriles or commute from Cabo San Lucas?
Stay in Los Barriles if you're kiting more than two days — the drive is 90 min each way and you miss the morning glass-off and the late-afternoon peak. East Cape rentals and small hotels are abundant. Use Cabo San Lucas if you're mixing kite with other activities and only kiting one or two sessions.
Los Barriles vs Isla Blanca for IKO lessons?
Both are excellent IKO learning spots — flat water, sand bottom, steady thermals. Los Barriles has stronger wind (nortes 20-30 kn) and a cooler season feel; Isla Blanca near Cancún is warmer, shallower for further out, and operates roughly April-September. Pick the one that matches your travel window.
