PADI Open Water in Cancún — Cost, Days, What's Actually Included

Real pricing ranges, lesson structure across 3-4 days, what PADI eLearning replaces and the red flags in a cheap quote.

🔎 TL;DR

  • 3–4 days total with eLearning done before you land. Without eLearning, plan 5 full days.
  • Price range $350–550 USD for Open Water in Cancún. Anything under $300 is either cutting corners or using a different certifying agency.
  • Includes: eLearning access, instructor, dive gear, 4 open-water training dives + pool sessions, PADI digital card.
  • Does NOT usually include: transfer, lunch, dive insurance, manual in paper.
  • Minimum age 10 (junior), 15 (full). No prior experience required.

The four-day breakdown

  • Pre-arrival (2–4 hours online): PADI eLearning knowledge development. You can also do it with physical manuals on Day 0 but it adds a day.
  • Day 1 — Confined water (8 hours): 5 pool sessions covering basic skills: mask clear, regulator recovery, neutral buoyancy, underwater ascent, emergency protocols.
  • Day 2 — Open water dives 1 & 2: First boat dive 8-12 m. Repeat key skills from the pool in open water. Second dive usually 10-14 m.
  • Day 3 — Open water dives 3 & 4: Navigation, buddy protocol, emergency ascent. Final dive 15-18 m. Certification paperwork completed in the afternoon.

You receive the digital PADI eCard within days — valid worldwide, for life.

What a suspiciously cheap quote hides

  • Compressed schedule: 4 dives in 2 days instead of 4 is physically tight and often against PADI standards.
  • Massive classes: 1 instructor to 8 students. Standard is max 4.
  • Old rental gear past its annual service date.
  • "Referral" — you pay for Open Water but only get the confined water + theory. The 4 open-water dives you must complete somewhere else. Technically legal, commercially deceptive.

Frequently asked questions

Do I really need to do eLearning before I arrive?

Strongly recommended. It saves 1–1.5 days of your trip. PADI eLearning costs ~$180 USD separately and some shops include it.

Can I fly the day after my last dive?

No — wait 18 hours minimum after a single dive, 24 hours after multiple dives. DCS (decompression sickness) risk is real. Plan your flight home with at least one full non-diving day after the last dive.

What if weather cancels a day?

Good schools build one buffer day. Bad ones charge rescheduling fees. Ask the cancellation policy before paying.

Can I continue to Advanced during the same trip?

Yes — PADI Advanced Open Water adds 2 days (5 adventure dives). Popular combo is "Open Water + Advanced" in 5-6 days total.
