🔎 TL;DR
- Best overall window: Nov–Apr. Dry season, peak visibility on both reef and cenotes, minimal sargassum.
- Whale sharks: mid-Jun to mid-Sep only, regulated by CONANP. Snorkel only — scuba with whale sharks is prohibited by Mexican law.
- Hurricane risk: Aug–Oct. The NHC marks Sep as peak Atlantic hurricane month.
- Water temperature never drops below 26 °C, so there is no "cold" season — only rougher-sea season.
The monthly breakdown
| Month | Reef viz | Water °C | Sargassum | Recommended for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 25–35 m | 26 °C | Low | Reef + cenotes. Peak season, book early. |

| March | 25–35 m | 26–27 °C | Low | Excellent. Spring break crowds in late March. |
| April | 20–30 m | 27 °C | Rising | Last clean window before sargassum. |
| May | 20–30 m | 27–28 °C | High | Value season. Book cenotes; reef still OK. |

| July | 20–30 m | 29 °C | Peak | Whale sharks in full swing. |
| August | 20–30 m | 29 °C | Peak | Whale sharks + hurricane watch begins. |
| September | 15–25 m | 29 °C | Declining | Shoulder. Watch weather. |
| October | 15–25 m | 28 °C | Low | Quietest month — cheapest flights. |
| November | 25–40 m | 27 °C | Low | Dry season back. Excellent visibility. |

What each profile should book
- Cenote-focused trip: Dec–Apr. Clear water makes the light beams dramatic; drier forest trails easier too.
- Reef + whale shark combo: Mid-Jun to early-Sep. Accept the sargassum on shore; the open water is fine.
- Budget trip: Oct. Shoulder prices, decent diving, some weather gamble.
- PADI certification trip: Nov–Mar. Max class time without weather cancellations.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a "worst" month to dive in Cancún?
September — hurricane peak. Not impossible to dive, but cancellation risk is real. If travel is locked in for Sep, build buffer days in the itinerary.
How does sargassum affect underwater visibility?
Minimally at depth. Sargassum floats — it messes up shore entries, marinas and beach views, but reef sites 5–10 km offshore stay clear. Cenotes are totally unaffected.
Is whale shark season the same every year?
Yes — roughly 15 June to 15 September. Opening/closing dates are set by CONANP and confirmed yearly. Peak concentration usually late July to mid-August.
When do dive prices drop?
Oct–early Nov is the quietest window. Shops often discount 10–20% then. Jan–Mar is peak so prices hold firm; book 6+ weeks ahead.
