🔎 TL;DR
- Open Water alone does NOT certify you for cave penetration. It only allows cavern-zone dives with a cavern-trained guide running a permanent guideline.
- Training progression: Open Water → Cavern Diver → Intro-to-Cave → Full Cave. Skipping steps is a recorded cause of cave-diving fatalities (NSS-CDS / IUCRR data).
- The Rule of Thirds, continuous guideline, and redundant air source are non-negotiable from Cavern up.
What each level actually lets you do
| Level | Max depth | Environment | Certifying bodies |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open Water | 18 m | Open water only | PADI, SSI, NAUI |
| Cavern Diver | 21 m | Within daylight of exit, ≤60 m linear penetration | PADI, NACD, TDI, IANTD |
| Intro-to-Cave | 30 m | Single line beyond daylight | NACD, TDI, IANTD, NSS-CDS |
| Full Cave | 40 m+ | Complex navigation, jumps, gaps | NACD, TDI, IANTD, NSS-CDS |
The rules that save lives
- Rule of Thirds. Use 1/3 of your gas entering, 1/3 exiting, keep 1/3 reserve.
- Continuous guideline from open water. Never let go, never without redundancy.
- Redundant air source — typically double tanks or pony. Single tank + regulator in cave = unacceptable above entry training.
- No solo diving. Period.
- Maximum penetration distance based on training level. Do not exceed, ever.

Frequently asked questions
Is cavern zone really safe for non-cave divers?
With a properly trained guide and permanent line, yes. Cavern zone means always within daylight of exit. Incidents are extremely rare when protocols are followed.
Can I get a Cavern certification on vacation?
Yes — 3-day PADI Cavern Diver course. But it is not a shortcut to cave diving; it is a specific specialty.
Why is cave diving so risk-managed compared to other diving?
What if I am nervous about overhead?
Totally normal. Start with Casa Cenote (open-air manglar channel) — technically not a cavern. If that feels OK, try Gran Cenote (wide cavern). Stop if it feels wrong.
