🔎 TL;DR
- Main risks: heat/dehydration, sunburn, Nortes, crocodiles in open lagoon.
- Mandatory: lifejacket, water (1 L per hour), sun protection, guided route in protected zones.
- Avoid: solo paddling in unfamiliar mangrove, night paddling without guide, alcohol before trip.
- Emergencies: your guide carries radio and first aid; no cell signal in most protected areas.
The four real risks in detail
- Heat: 30–35 °C in summer; sustained paddling causes heat exhaustion fast. Stop frequently, drink aggressively.
- Sunburn: the Yucatán UV index reaches 11+ in summer. Long-sleeve rashguard mandatory in open water.
- Nortes: front systems build winds 20–30 kn in hours. Tours cancel, period. Check SMN forecast before launching.
- Crocodiles: American crocodiles in lagoon systems. Very low incident rate; guides avoid mangrove edges.
