🔎 TL;DR
- Cabo Pulmo is a 71 km² no-take marine park on the East Cape — one of very few fully recovered coral reefs on the planet.
- Biomass recovered 460% in 20 years thanks to strict protection. Documented in Nature, National Geographic.
- From Cabo San Lucas it's a 2-hour drive each way. Long day but the diving is unmatched in Mexico.
- Bull-shark season Nov–Mar. Sea-lion colonies year-round. Massive jack and snapper schools every dive.
- Open Water minimum; Advanced recommended for some sites. Discover Scuba available in shallow zones.
Why Cabo Pulmo is unique on this planet
In 1995 the Cabo Pulmo reef was largely depleted by overfishing. Local fishermen — facing collapse — petitioned the Mexican government to declare a no-take park. Since then, with strict enforcement, biomass has recovered 460%, including a 1,000% rebound in top predators. National Geographic, Nature and the New York Times have all documented the recovery as a global model.
The practical implication for divers: you see schools of jacks 1,000+ strong, healthy hard coral, sea-lion colonies, bull sharks (Nov–Mar) and the occasional manta. Few reefs on the planet still offer this density of marine life.
What no Cancún tour shows you
Cancún and Riviera Maya have the Mesoamerican Reef diving — also great diving, but heavily visited and partially impacted by warming. Cabo Pulmo offers:
- Massive jack schools — the kind that block out the sun. Doesn't happen on most Mesoamerican Reef sites anymore.
- Sea lions in coral — Land's End sea-lion colonies + reef diving in the same site. Caribbean has no sea lions.
- Bull-shark winter season — Different than the PDC bull-shark dives; less reliable but conditions are completely uncrowded.
- Hard-coral health — Cabo Pulmo coral has bleached less than Caribbean equivalents. Healthier visual structure.

Best dive sites in Cabo Pulmo
- El Bajo — Massive jack schools, healthy coral, depth 12–25 m. The classic.
- Sea Lion Colony — Sea-lion encounters, shallower (~10–18 m). Newcomer-friendly.
- El Cantil — Wall dive 25+ m. Bull sharks Nov–Mar, mantas occasional.
- Los Morros — Pinnacles, schooling fish, deep dive (Advanced recommended).
Practical tips
- Stay overnight in Cabo Pulmo village if you can — small eco-cabins, perfect for a 2-day dive trip.
- Cell signal is weak. Bring downloaded music/podcasts for the drive.
- 5 mm wetsuit recommended Nov–Mar; 3 mm rest of year.
- Bring your dive log — dive sites are bucket-list-grade and worth the entry.
Frequently asked questions
What dive certification do I need for Cabo Pulmo?
PADI Open Water (or equivalent) is the minimum. Most of the signature sites — El Vencedor, El Bajo, Los Morros — sit between 18 and 30 m, so Advanced Open Water is strongly recommended. Non-certified divers can do a Discover Scuba session on shallower reef instead.
Best month to dive Cabo Pulmo?
Late October to early December for the best visibility (25-30 m) and the highest chance of pelagic action — jacks, mobula rays, sharks. Water sits at 23-26 °C, so a 3 mm wetsuit is enough. June to September is warmer (27-29 °C) but with more plankton and slightly lower visibility.
Will I see bull sharks?
Bull sharks are present year-round but most commonly sighted from October to January. Encounters happen at El Bajo and Los Morros at deeper levels. The park rules are strict — no chumming, no feeding, no chasing — so sightings are passive and never guaranteed.
How do I get to Cabo Pulmo from Cabo San Lucas?
About 2 hr 15 min by road — pavement to La Ribera, then 10 km of well-maintained dirt road into the park. Most operators offer round-trip van transport with the dives. Self-drive in a regular car is fine in dry season; high-clearance helps after the August storms.
