Yacht Departures — Cancún vs Riviera Maya vs Cozumel: Which Marina Should You Use?

Three Quintana Roo marinas head to head — fleet, access, scene and the routes each one unlocks.

🔎 TL;DR

  • Cancún Marina: biggest fleet (60+ yachts), closest to Isla Mujeres, cheapest per-foot. Default for first-time guests and short days.
  • Puerto Aventuras (Riviera Maya): south-coast access, best for Cozumel crossings and Tulum-coast cruising, quieter marina, slightly higher fuel cost per day.
  • Cozumel: island itself — limited inventory, but the only base for a Palancar-reef-only day or a guided drift dive day on the world-class wall.
  • All three sit in the same Caribbean basin under SEMAR port authority; weather and seasonality are identical.
  • Choose by your destination, not by your hotel: Isla Mujeres → Cancún; Cozumel + Tulum coast → Puerto Aventuras; Palancar wall only → Cozumel.

Three departure points, one Caribbean

Quintana Roo has three meaningful yacht-charter departure points. They share the same water — same Mesoamerican Reef, same Caribbean trade winds, same SEMAR port-captain authority — but they reach different destinations within a one-day round trip. Most guests pick the wrong one because they default to "closest to my hotel" instead of "closest to where I want to go". This guide fixes that.

The three options:

  • Cancún Marina cluster (Marina Hacienda del Mar, Aquatours, Puerto Juárez, Marina Paraíso) — the biggest fleet in the region, ~60–80 charter yachts.
  • Puerto Aventuras marina — private gated marina in the Riviera Maya, ~30 km south of Cancún, the operational hub for Cozumel and Tulum-coast yacht days.
  • Cozumel (Puerto de Abrigo, Marina Caleta) — the island's own fleet, smaller but with direct access to the Palancar / Santa Rosa wall.

Cancún Marina — the default, mostly correctly

Cancún's marina cluster sits on the inner edge of the Hotel Zone and Puerto Juárez. The biggest operational advantages:

  • Largest fleet — competitive pricing, more boat-size options per date.
  • Closest to Isla Mujeres — 10–13 km each way, the most popular Caribbean yacht day in Mexico. Covered in detail in our Isla Mujeres day-trip guide.
  • Closest to MUSA — the Museo Subacuático de Arte (Jason deCaires Taylor) sits inside the CONANP-managed Parque Nacional Costa Occidental, 15 min by yacht from Cancún Marina.
  • Closest to international airport — CUN is 25 min by van.

The trade-off: everything south of Tulum is impractical. Cozumel from Cancún Marina is 4 hours of underway time round-trip — possible, but you'll have only 3–4 hours on the island. Most Cancún yacht days never leave the Isla Mujeres / MUSA loop.

Puerto Aventuras — the south-coast specialist

Puerto Aventuras is a private gated marina ~30 km south of Cancún (90 min by van) and the de facto base for Riviera Maya yacht charters. Its position halfway between Playa del Carmen and Tulum gives it three exclusive advantages:

  • Shortest Cozumel crossing of any mainland marina — 22 km (12 NM), 45–60 min on a typical cruiser. From Cancún Marina that same crossing is ~90 km.
  • Direct access to the Tulum coast and Sian Ka'an boundary — covered in our Riviera Maya yacht routes article. The UNESCO Sian Ka'an reserve begins ~25 km south of Tulum and is a once-in-a-decade sail-by.
  • Less crowded — typically 6–10 yachts loading guests on any given morning vs 40+ in Cancún. Easier boarding, quieter dock.

Trade-offs: smaller fleet means fewer boat-size options on short notice; fuel cost per day is slightly higher (longer crossings to either Cozumel or Isla Mujeres); marina access is gated and requires the operator to clear you in.

Cozumel — the island as base

Cozumel is the world-famous drift-dive island. Its own yacht fleet is smaller — most island visitors arrive by ferry from Playa del Carmen or by cruise ship and book day boats locally. As a yacht-charter base, Cozumel makes sense in two scenarios:

  • You're already staying on Cozumel (3+ night stay) and want a yacht day along the Palancar / Santa Rosa wall without the mainland crossing.
  • You want a Palancar-only or wall-only experience. The marine park starts 100 m offshore, so you're on coral within minutes of leaving the dock.

Limitations: smaller fleet, fewer luxury yachts, fewer crew-on-deck options. The flotilla of dive boats around the same reef in peak hours can be heavy — NOAA reef visitation studies and CONANP local data both flag user-density management on the west coast.

The destination-first decision matrix

Forget marinas. Pick your destination first; the marina follows automatically.

  • Isla Mujeres, MUSA, Manchones, El Meco → Cancún Marina. Same-day round trip, calm crossing.
  • Cozumel west coast (Chankanaab, Palancar from above), reef snorkel + lunch → Puerto Aventuras. Half the crossing time of Cancún.
  • Tulum coast, Akumal, Xpu-Há, Sian Ka'an sail-by → Puerto Aventuras. Only practical base.
  • Maroma anchor swim, sunset cruise off PDC → Puerto Aventuras (anchor offshore PDC, tender boarding).
  • Palancar wall drift dive from yacht, Santa Rosa, Punta Sur → Cozumel itself.
  • Multi-day live-aboard Riviera Maya → Cozumel overnight → Puerto Aventuras start, Cozumel overnight, return. See our 2-day overnight itinerary.

Hotel-to-marina logistics

Where you sleep changes the math even when the destination is fixed:

  • Hotel in Cancún Hotel Zone → Cancún Marina 10–20 min. Puerto Aventuras 90 min. Cozumel = ferry from PDC (additional 60 min). Pick Cancún unless the destination strictly requires the south.
  • Hotel in Playa del Carmen → Puerto Aventuras 20 min, Cancún Marina 60 min. Default Puerto Aventuras.
  • Hotel in Tulum → Puerto Aventuras 50 min, Cancún 2 h. Default Puerto Aventuras.
  • Hotel in Cozumel → Cozumel local (5–10 min by taxi to Puerto de Abrigo).

Cost comparison — same boat, three marinas

For a 45 ft yacht, 8-hour high-season private charter, 10 guests:

  • Cancún Marina to Isla Mujeres: base ~$3,200 USD + $25/guest marina + $6/guest Isla Mujeres landing + fuel surcharge $200–300 = ~$3,750 USD total before food and tip.
  • Puerto Aventuras to Cozumel: base ~$3,400 USD + $25/guest marina + $30/guest Cozumel marine park + fuel surcharge $250–400 = ~$4,000 USD total before food and tip.
  • Cozumel local Palancar day: base ~$3,000 USD + $20/guest marina + $30/guest park + lower fuel = ~$3,300 USD total before food and tip.

The Cozumel local day is technically cheapest if you're already on the island, but it requires an extra night of accommodation. For mainland-based guests the all-in trip cost (yacht + accommodation + transfers) is comparable across the three options.

Frequently asked questions

If I'm staying in Cancún, can I still book a Puerto Aventuras yacht?

Yes, but you add 90 min of road transfer each way. That's usually only worth it if you really want Cozumel or the Tulum coast. For Isla Mujeres, Cancún Marina is the clear answer.

Is Puerto Aventuras a "real" marina with services?

Yes — full fuel, pump-out, fresh water, restaurants on the dock, customs presence. It's a private gated community marina, smaller than Cancún but with all infrastructure. APIQROO regulates it under the Quintana Roo port system.

Can I do Isla Mujeres from Puerto Aventuras?

Technically yes — 65 km each way, ~2 hours. By the time you arrive you have 2–3 hours on the island and you're back at 6 pm. It's not what the marina is designed for. Cancún is the natural Isla Mujeres base.

Does Cozumel charge a different marine park fee than Cancún?

Both Cancún (Parque Nacional Costa Occidental) and Cozumel (Parque Marino) are CONANP-managed and charge per-visitor fees that update annually. Current rates are roughly $25–30 USD per guest at each, with the funds going to mooring buoys and ranger ops. Confirm the current fee with your operator.

Where do international yachts (foreign flag) base?

Almost exclusively Cancún Marina or Puerto Aventuras, which both have customs / SEMAR clearance facilities. Foreign yachts need a Temporary Import Permit (TIP) from Mexican customs — covered in our charter contracts & port rules guide.
