🔎 TL;DR
- The optimal Riviera Maya week: cenote + reef + turtles + Sian Ka'an + yacht, paced for recovery between adventures.
- Land in Cancún (CUN), stay 3 nights Tulum + 4 nights Playa del Carmen — best access to all activities.
- Mix high-intensity (diving, kayak Sian Ka'an) with lighter days (snorkel, beach time, paddleboard).
- Best window November–May; avoid August–October hurricane risk.
- Total budget guide: ~$2,500–4,000 USD per person all-in (flights, accommodation, activities, food).
The 7-night sequence
This itinerary balances intensity, recovery and variety. Day 1 arrival, Day 7 departure — leaves 5 full activity days. Mornings are mostly water; afternoons are flexible (cenote / pool / beach / Maya ruins).
Day 1 — Arrival, settle in (Tulum)
Land CUN, transfer 1h45 to Tulum. Settle into your hotel. Beach walk, dinner in Tulum town. Don't book activity Day 1 — flight fatigue is real.
Day 2 — Akumal turtle snorkel + Casa Cenote
Morning: licensed Akumal turtle snorkel (45 min in water with green turtles). Afternoon: Casa Cenote snorkel for jungle freshwater contrast. Two icons in one day. Easy reset for jet lag.
Day 3 — Cenote diving (or sunrise SUP)
Divers: full-day cenote diving at Dos Ojos + Gran Cenote. Non-divers: sunrise paddleboard at Tulum beach + lunch + Tulum ruins (afternoon).
Day 4 — Sian Ka'an kayak
Half-day Sian Ka'an Maya canals kayak. Bird wildlife, ancient canals, mangrove silence. Pace down for the rest of the day — you'll be tired.
Day 5 — Move to Playa del Carmen
Check out, drive 45 min north to PDC. Settle into new hotel. Afternoon Caribbean SUP or beach time. Quinta Avenida walk in the evening.
Day 6 — Mesoamerican Reef
Morning: PDC reef dive (drift wall, eagle rays, turtles) or Puerto Morelos National Park reef snorkel. Afternoon: relax / cenote.
Day 7 — Yacht charter Cozumel + departure
Final day: Cozumel yacht day-trip. Reef snorkel, lunch on Cozumel beach, return for evening flight from CUN. 1h drive back to airport.

Frequently asked questions
Where should I base for the week?
Playa del Carmen for first-timers — best mix of cenotes, reef access, and walkable food/lodging. Akumal if your focus is turtles and you want a quieter base. Tulum is gorgeous but adds 30-60 minutes of driving to most North Riviera Maya activities — pick it only if Tulum cenotes and the ruins are your priority.
Do I need a rental car?
Strongly recommended if you're doing the full itinerary — cenotes, Akumal, and Cozumel ferry terminal are 20-60 min apart and pre-booked transfers add up fast. Budget USD 35-55/day for a compact in low season. If you stay in Playa del Carmen and only do operator-led tours with pickup, you can skip it.
What if I am not certified for cenote diving?
You can still see cenotes — guided snorkel tours run at Dos Ojos, Casa Cenote, and Gran Cenote and are spectacular. Non-certified divers can also do a cavern Discover Scuba at select cenotes with a guide. Full cave-diver cert is not required for the standard tour route — Open Water (with Advanced for some sites) is enough for cavern dives.
Best month for this full itinerary?
December, January, and March are the strongest windows — dry, clear cenote visibility, calm seas for reef days. February can have north winds that interrupt boat days. June to August adds the whale shark window off Isla Mujeres but trades that for higher humidity and afternoon thunderstorms.
